I want software to empower people and be a source of good. But as we all know, algorithms, platforms, and addiction have taken a toll on people's mental health.
The research is clear: vanity metrics including like counts affect our mood, self-esteem, and can become addictive and lead to impulsive behavior. Companies leverage these numbers to create peer pressure, competition, and dependency to help their bottom-line. Adolescents are particularly susceptible to these effects.
I built Trash Panda to counteract the gamification of social interactions that reduce socializing into a numbers game: who has the most likes, followers, views, or subscribers?
